Georgia Geological Field Trip 2008 in Google Earth
Students of the Walker School in Marietta, GA participated in the 2008 Georgia Geological Society annual field trip. Geology and environmental science students were interested in learning more about the geology of Northern Georgia. On this trip, they visited an abandoned quarry where they could view three different lithofacies of the Middle Ordovician Rockmart Slate, a river bed where they could view the contact relationship between schist and granofelsic gneiss (metagraywacke) of the Piedmont Blue Ridge province and carbonates of the Valley and Ridge provinces, a quarry were limestone was once minded for cement production, the Springdale Church fault where they learned about a splay, and the Vulcan Rockmart Quarry where they witnessed cyclic interbedding of dark gray limestones with light gray dolostones, which may have been laid down through shallow subtidal deposits.
